Here's a good way of looking at it...

Let's say you are a $4 million company running at a 20% profit magin.  You are looking to introduce training that will assist in growing revenues by just 1% and cut 1% of costs through being more efficient.  Let's say the dollar value for your training comes to $18 thousand, and realistically you'll achieve 50% of your goal by the end of year one and 100% by the end of year 2.

At end of year one, you would have increased profits by $24,100 (133% return on investment).  At the end of year 2 you'd be $52,642 better off (7% improvement to the bottom line and a 326% total return on your training investment).  And remember you've only made a 1% change to your business!  If you were to set a target of 10% at the end of year 2 you would be over $500,000 healthier on the bottom line.
